Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
Jesus answered him, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”” (Luke 9:62)
This verse challenges me. The individuals with whom Jesus spoke all appeared to have legitimate reasons to delay their pursuit of Him and His Kingdom. As I look at my life and the daily choices that I make, I can easily replace their reasons for delay with things that distract me. This could be a work or family commitment or possibly a recreational pursuit. It could even be an old way of thinking that I am holding onto. These reasons often carry the outward appearance of legitimacy, but have the potential to serve as intentional or even unintentional distractions that prevent advancement into the things that God has invited me to walk in. Jesus acknowledges that following His ways can be difficult at times.
However, as I keep my focus on Jesus and what He is inviting me to walk toward, I am less distracted and more able to walk toward Him and His Kingdom. Ultimately, this is where I find my greatest satisfaction, and from this place those around me are most impacted.
Our Father in heaven,
thank You for daily inviting us to walk in Your Kingdom and in Your ways. Help us to be so captivated by You that we cannot help but follow You wherever You lead us on our unique journeys. Amen.
